SNOW HILL FAMILY TIES

The major families of Snow Hill are discussed below.  Randy Presley, to whom much of the work within this site is credited, has performed a great service to the Snow Hill community in obtaining, preparing and making available the various genealogical data used here and in each family's respective page (see sub-menu, above).

If you would like to make amendments or changes to the family genealogical information contained within this site, please contact me via email at hunt.justin@gmail.com with the following information: (1) full name (including maiden name, if applicable), (2) date of birth, (3) date of death (if applicable), (4) father's full name, (5) mother's full name (and maiden name), and (6) your contact information (email address is preferred).  Additional informational to aid in the process can include items such as place of internment (if deceased), children's names, etc.  I will add this information as soon as is conveniently possible and send a confirmation email to you.  If you have linked web pages, pictures, stories, or any other information you would like to have added to this page - please contact Justin Hunt.

Additionally, we are still in the process of building out genealogical research for those families interned in Snow Hill via Ancestry.com. Please contact Justin if you wish to furnish him information on genealogical research at the contact forms listed on the home page

Since families in the 1800's and early 1900's in this area did not have the means of travel as we have today, they often married within the community or the nearby communities. Randy's research has taken him to the Blevins-Cason Cemetery, the Justiss Cemetery, the Center Grove Cemetery, the Concord Cemetery, the Traylor family Cemetery and major cemeteries in Mt. Pleasant, Daingerfield and surrounding communities.

The Cass County Genealogical Society has done an excellent job of cataloging all of the cemeteries in Morris County. They have published this into two volumes with one being for the South part of the county and the other for the North part. Snow Hill is in the South volume. For anyone who is interested buying one of these books, the Cass County Genealogical Society may be reached by email at cass_tx_gen_soc@yahoo.com. Many relatives of people buried at Snow Hill are buried at Concord Cemetery, the Daingerfield City Cemetery, the Reynolds Cemetery and the Blevins-Cason Cemetery.

HUNT

The Hunt family tree dates back to the 18th century and an American Revolutionary War veteran. Much of this genealogical search is directly credited to Vernon Grady Hunt (grandson of A.S. Hunt, who is interned in Snow Hill) who went to great lengths to discover and develop the Hunt family history lineage. The earliest Hunt included in this tree is James Hunt who was a Sergeant Major of the 10th Virginia Militia in the American Revolution.  This information can be useful to anyone listed as a direct descendent who is interested in becoming a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) or the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR). To find the first of the Hunt family buried in Snow HIll, please scroll down to the sixth generation (James Hunt’s great, great, great grandson) to Anglo Saxon Hunt.

Credit must also be given to Randy Presley, who prepared this genealogic information in its current form; his mother was Gladys L. Hunt and she was very good during her lifetime to keep in touch with the large family of her father and mother, Anglo and Dora Hunt, both of whom are buried at Snow Hill.

Please contact Justin Hunt (see above) with respect to any requested changes or amendments to the information contained within. The family tree is available for download in both MS Word and PDF formats.

TRAYLOR

Randy Presley has obtained and prepared the majority of the genealogical information included here.  From Randy:

The Traylor family history dates from Eduoard Traillour born May 7, 1539 in Nouzon, France. This is a very long listing that includes Presley, Russell, Ryan, Wilkinson, Lasater, Blevins, Justiss, and other families and some of their descendants. There may be some discrepancy about Eduoard Traillour with a birth date in 1539 and Edward Traylor, Sr with a birth date in 1639. Data from Edward Traylor, Sr b. 1639 to present is reasonably accurate, however, information has come to me from many sources and some do not coincide and, too, I have may have made some typo errors. Much of the data prior to Edward Traylor, III came from a Traylor Family Tree developed by someone other than me.

Most of the detailed information that I have is from Dunstan Traylor and his descendants. Please scroll to the sixth generation (see link below to family page).

Dunstan Traylor, a descendant of this family line, is buried in the Traylor Family Cemetery on private property about 7 miles east of Mt. Pleasant, TX on State Highway 49. To visit this cemetery you will need access through locked gates. You may contact me at my email address (above) and I will let you in. Due to major highway construction as of June 2004 and a change of entrance to the old Traylor home place, it will require some walking through a pasture to reach the cemetery which is fenced and maintained. One descendant of Edward Traylor, Sr buried in Snow Hill is my maternal grandmother, China Adella Traylor Presley.

I have had a chance to review a 570 page typewritten notebook created by Carolyn Currey Hicks in 1993 which has a huge amount of information on the Traylor family as well as the Garrett family. She gave Grace Lillian (Russell) Richards a copy of the book which was recently discovered by her daughter, Mary (Richards) Stansell. Some information from this book has been added to this family listing but I have not completed reading through it as of 6-27-03.

The small numbers like the number 1 on the line below are all through this listing and have no genealogical significance as they are simply page numbers created by Family Tree Maker. The numbers in front of the names are generation numbers starting with Eduoard. This Descendant Listing goes through 12 generations. While it can never be fully confirmed, it appears that we may possibly be related through marriage to Pocahontas through relations with Martha Randolph.

Please contact Justin Hunt (see above) with respect to any requested changes or amendments to the information contained within for recent generations.

Family Ties

The connections of families buried at Snow Hill through marriage.

This paragraph is just one example of how a Bassett was traced down to Sidney Allen, and was compiled by Randy Presley:

Daisy Bassett was daughter of J. W. Bassett & Ida Henderson whose brother married Millie Ann Hayes, daughter of Solomon Hays who had a daughter Mary who married John Price who had a daughter Margaret Barcena Price who married A. D. Lunsford who had a son, G. C. Lunsford, who married Clara Dailey. Clara’s sister married Robert L. Hunt who was a brother to Gladys Hunt who married Gus Presley whose mother Della Traylor who was a sister to Ethel Traylor who married Clay Russell, Sr who had a daughter, Jennie, who married L. E. Allen, Sr. who had a son named, Sidney Allen. This is the connection to the Bassett family from the Allen family

Since Sidney Allen made the contribution for this research, I’ll start with him and work down. The related families are in random order and the family name is in Bold print. Families with genealogical research contained within this website are linked to their family pages.

Sidney Allen is the son of Jennie Russell and L. E. Allen, Sr.

Jennie Russell is the daughter of Clay Russell, Sr. so this is the connection to the Russell family.

Grace Lillian Russell married Rufus Richards making a connection to the Richards family. Grace Lillian and Rufus had a daughter, Mary, who married James Stansell making a connection to the Stansell family. Rufus Richards had a sister Della Pauline Richards who married Audie L. Owens who is buried at Snow Hill and this makes the connection tot he Owens family.

Clay Russell, Sr. married Ethel Traylor so here is the tie to all in the Traylor family.

Clay and Ethel also had a son, George Traylor Russell, who was one of the original developers of the Snow Hill Perpetual Care Fund along with Gus Presley.

Ethel had a sister, China Adella Traylor, who married William Robert Presley so here is the tie to the Presley family.

John T. Presley married Martha Jane Daniel who was born in 1796 and she has the oldest date of birth of any grave at Snow Hill. They had a daughter, Charlotte, who married Dr. James F. Wilkinson, one of the earliest doctors in Snow Hill, so this makes a connection to the Wilkinson family.

China Adella Presley and W. R. Presley had a son, Augustus R. “Gus” Presley, Sr who married Gladys Hunt so this is the connection to the Hunt family.

Gladys Hunt Presley had a brother, Robert L. Hunt, Sr. who married Bessie Daily so this is the connection to the Daily family.

Bessie Daily Hunt had a sister, Clara Daily, who married George C. Lunsford so this is the connection to the Lunsford family.

George C. Lunsford’s father was A. D. Lunsford who was married to Margaret Barcena Price so this is the connection to the Price family.

Margaret Price Lunsford’s father was John Price who married Mary Hayes so this is the connection to the Hayes Family.

Gladys Hunt Presley had a brother, Grady Hunt, who was married to Elizabeth Galloupe. Elizabeth had a sister, Velma, who married Tom Smith which makes a connection to the Smith Family.

Tom Smith had a brother, Otis Monroe “Babe” Smith who had a daughter, Lou Ella, who married Frank Sloan Caldwell so this is the connection to the Caldwell family.

Tom Smith had another daughter, Eunice, who married George Hillmann and they had a daughter, Mari Lynn Player Hillmann so this makes the connection to the Hillmann family

Tom had another daughter, Evie Lorena, who married Onza Justiss so this makes a connection to the Justiss family.

Leonard Justiss married Velma Walker so this made a connection to the Walker family.

Velma Walker had a sister, Nora Lee, who married Billy L. McCauley and this makes a connection to the McCauley family.

Babe Smith had a daughter, Hattie Faye, who married a Welch and this makes a connection to the Welch family.

Gertrude Justiss was married to a Smelser so this makes a connection to the Smelser family.

Cattie Justiss, wife of George W. Tigert, Sr. was related to Onza Justiss so this makes a connection to the Tigert family.

George W. Tigert, Sr had a son, Joe, who married Thelma Carruth so this makes a connection to the Carruth family.

J. W. Tigert married Lila Clifton Nelson making a connection to the Nelson family.

Lila Nelson’s parents were James Nelson and Mary Gilpin. Mary Gilpin had a sister, Hallie, who married a Parham making a Parham family connection.

Sara Justiss married Victor Howell, who had a son, Abb Howell, who is the father of James Howell and this is the connection to the Howell family.

Abb Howell’s second wife was Thelma Coffey and this is the connection to the Coffey family. Thelma was the daughter of Luther Coffey and Mattie Russell who was a daughter of Whitfield Russell.

Clay L. Russell, Sr. is the son of Whitfield L. Russell who married Eugenia Jennie Wall so this is the connection to the Wall family.

Eugenia Jennie Wall was married four times and is buried at Snow Hill as Mrs. E. J. Holmes so this is a relation to the Holmes family.

Eugenia Jennie Wall was also married to James P. Colley so this is the connection to the Colley family. The two McMillin graves are related to the Wall family and the connection to the McMillin family is explained below. It is said that William Henry Johnson was orphaned at about age 2 and raised by Littleberry McMillin and his wife Luraney Wall McMillin. Hayes Johnson was a son of William Henry Johnson and Josephine Hayes Johnson. Hayes was a brother to Willie Lowe Johnson Justiss (thanks to JoyLynn Justiss Edwards for the corrections to this paragraph).

Clay L. Russell, Sr. and Eugenia J. Wall had a daughter, Perdie Russell (sister to Clay, Jr.) who married Ed McElroy so this is the connection to the McElroy family.

Ed McElroy was the son of Robert McElroy and Sallie Cason so this is the connection to the Cason family.

Robert and Sallie McElroy had a daughter, Bobbie, who married Mellie Rogers making a Rogers family connection.

Their daughter, Mellie Bob Rogers, married a Lawrence so this is the Lawrence family connection.

Mura Cason Jernigan was the daughter of John Cason making the Jernigan family connection.

Also, Sallie Cason had a brother, John Walter Cason, who married Daily Old so this is the connection to the Old family.

Also, Sallie Cason had a sister, Margaret aka Maggie, who married D. T. “Tom” Wardlow so this is the connection to the Wardlow family.

John M. Cason had a daughter, Emma, who married Henry Talley, who had a son Jack Talley so this is the connection to the Talley family.

Another of his daughters, Ella, married Jim Anderson so this is the tie to the Anderson family.

Griff Cason has a daughter, Mari Anne, who married James Buchanan so this is the connection to the Buchanan family.

Mollie Jane Cason married Clarence P. Johnson so this is the connection to the Johnson family.

Mollie Jane and Clarence Johnson had a daughter, Lula, who married Gilbert Denny so this is the connection to the Denny family.

Jack Cason married Evelyn Cox whose mother Ada Patterson was married to John C. Cox which makes the connection to the Patterson family.

Evelyn’s grandmother was Nancy Caroline Minerva Davis which makes a connection to the Davis family

Mary Hays had a sister, Millie Ann Hays, who had a brother who married John Henderson so this is the connection to the Henderson family.

John Robert Lee “Bob” Henderson was married to Polly Mallonee first and then she married a Ferguson so this is the family connection to the Ferguson family.

Tennie Henderson married Thomas “Dee” Whitaker making a connection to the Whitaker family.

They had a daughter, Gladys Dee Whitaker, who married Earl Wayne Fomby, Sr. so this is the tie to the Fomby family.

Tennie Henderson’s second husband was T. L. Simpson, Sr. and they had Tommy Lee Simpson, Jr. and Simp Henderson Simpson which makes a connection to the Simpson family. Simp married Viva DuBose and they had a daughter, Tillie Ann, who married James Kidwell.

There is an unmarked grave for Mary Pernina Henderson Janes but I find no Mary Pernina Henderson in that family tree but there is quite likely a family relationship. Nautello Ozora is her daughter who is also buried at Snow Hill in an unmarked grave.

John Henderson and Millie Ann Hayes had a daughter, Ida L. Henderson, who married J. W. Bassett so this is the connection to the Bassett family.

J. W. Bassett and Ida Henderson Bassett had a daughter, Daisy Bassett, who married Jeff Montgomery so this is the connection to the Montgomery family.

Gloria Bassett McCain is the mother of Ann McCain Markwith so there is a connection through the Basset family to both McCain and Markwith families.

Lorene Griggs was a Howell so this makes a connection to Griggs family.
